In a recent move that could spell significant change for the future of blockchain interoperability, Cosmos developers have revealed a successful test of the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol between the Cosmos Hub and the Ethereum network.
The transaction, which was conducted through Interchain Labs, marks a significant step forward in the quest for native and efficient communication between the two networks.
Co-CEO of Interchain Labs, a major contributor to the Cosmos blockchain, Maghnus Mareneck, highlighted in a post on the X platform on March 26 the testing of an IBC transaction from the Cosmos Hub to Ethereum. In a significant development for the ecosystem, IBC is a standardized protocol that allows the transfer of assets and data between independent blockchains.
“The first IBC Hub transaction for the Ethereum testnet! After many years of waiting, IBC is now connecting to all ecosystems,” he wrote.

Technically, IBC uses light clients and relayers to ensure the security and efficiency of transactions. The developers believe that expanding IBC to the Ethereum ecosystem could help unlock new opportunities in DeFi and interchain applications, boosting the adoption and usability of cryptocurrencies. It is worth noting that the initiative is part of Eureka’s upcoming IBC upgrade, which aims to expand the reach of the protocol.
Cosmos Launches Cosmos EVM, Elevates Interoperability Capabilities with Native EVM Framework
The Interchain Foundation, a key entity in the Cosmos ecosystem, announced that Cosmos recently made a significant expansion of its technological capabilities by making Evmos, previously an independent project, an official part of the Cosmos SDK, now rebranded as “Cosmos EVM”. This move natively integrates a standardized version of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) into Cosmos’ vast multichain ecosystem, which currently houses over 200 appchains.
With this new addition, Cosmos EVM will provide blockchains within the Cosmos ecosystem with full EVM compatibility, enabling support for JSON-RPC and Ethereum wallets, as well as enabling seamless integration for native ERC-20 tokens. This integration aims to strengthen interoperability between chains on Cosmos and the broader EVM ecosystem through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol.
