Following a series of Ethereum events in Thailand in 2024, including the Devcon SEA conference in November, Buterin has decided to express his gratitude to the country in an unusual way: by adopting the viral pygmy hippopotamus, Moo Deng.
Moo Deng, who has gained celebrity status both in Thailand and internationally, now has a prominent “adoptive father.” Buterin has donated a minimum of 10 million Thai baht, equivalent to approximately $293,000 or about 88 ETH, to the Khao Kheow Open Zoo, where the adorable animal resides. According to Buterin, the donation aims to support the zoo’s operations, the Wildlife Sponsorship Program, and particularly the development of an exhibit dedicated to Moo Deng and her family.
“I am grateful for the warm welcome into the family and for your efforts in wildlife conservation! I am delighted to become a foster parent to Moo Deng as she grows up over the next 2 years and support her with my donation of 10 million THB, and maybe more as I have set aside 88 ETH for + friends. May they live long and prosper,” Buterin wrote.
This initiative arose after Buterin visited the zoo as a way to acknowledge Thai hospitality during the Ethereum events held in the country. In an online letter, Buterin expressed his gratitude to Thailand and its people on behalf of the entire Ethereum ecosystem.
“Thank you, Vitalik Buterin, for joining the Wildlife Sponsorship Program and adopting Moo Deng with a generous donation of 10,000,000 THB to her family! We look forward to collaborating with you over the next 2 years for the benefit of the Khao Kheow Open Zoo community and all our visitors!” the zoo staff expressed their gratitude on the X platform.
