In a significant move, the government of Bhutan has transferred $32 million worth of Bitcoin to a new digital wallet.
The multi-million dollar transaction was revealed by data from the Arkham Intelligence platform this Wednesday, April 2.
It is worth noting that the move comes just two weeks after a transfer of US$63 million worth of Bitcoin to three separate wallets. With this, the Bhutanese government’s investment arm, Druk Holdings, now holds a portfolio of approximately 8.594 Bitcoins, valued at around US$729 million at current prices.
The Bhutanese government’s move into Bitcoin comes amid expectations of volatility in cryptocurrency markets.
The imminent announcement of tariffs by US President Donald Trump has caused concern among investors. The tariffs will come into effect immediately after the president’s announcement, which could trigger significant price swings for digital assets.
Trump plans to announce this Wednesday, April 2, the so-called “Liberation Day”, with the implementation of 20% tariffs on imported products. In addition, a 25% tariff on imported vehicles is scheduled to come into effect as early as Thursday, April 3.
At the time of publication, the price of Bitcoin was quoted at US$85,592.96, up 3.3% in the last 24 hours.
S&P 500 Falls Today While Bitcoin Holds Steady With Trump’s Tariff Announcement
The United States Financial Markets faced a pullback on Wednesday, in anticipation of President Trump’s announcement of new tariffs that could reconfigure global trade relations. Negative expectations permeated Wall Street, resulting in a widespread decline in the futures of the most significant indexes.
Specifically, S&P 500 futures fell 0.8%, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell 0.5%. After a mixed session earlier in the session for major U.S. stock indexes, tech-focused Nasdaq 100 futures fell nearly 1%. Tesla shares were not immune either, dropping more than 2% in value.
