Former Bitcoin advocate and controversial figure in the cryptocurrency world Roger Ver is facing charges in the United States for alleged fraud and tax evasion. However, Donald Trump’s second ex-wife, Marla Maples, has joined a chorus of voices calling for the case to be dropped.

In April 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice charged Ver with mail fraud, tax evasion, and filing false tax returns. The allegations include failing to disclose his Bitcoin holdings when he renounced his U.S. citizenship in 2014, as well as failing to report $48 million in earnings from cryptocurrency sales. After being arrested in Spain, Ver was released on bail but with travel restrictions.

Amid this scenario, Marla Maples posted a video supporting Ver’s cause on social media on March 16. In the post, she tagged personalities such as Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Attorney General Pam Bondi, requesting that the case be dismissed. Maples, who was married to Trump from 1993 to 1999, has also shown solidarity on other occasions, including at the former president’s political events.

Other well-known figures in the cryptocurrency space have also expressed support for Ver. Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, and Ross Ulbricht, creator of Silk Road, are among those who have questioned the legitimacy of the charges. Ver, for his part, insists that the charges are unfair and constitute “lawfare.” He is also trying to obtain a presidential pardon and argues that tax rules applied to citizens who renounce their citizenship are ambiguous when it comes to cryptocurrencies.
